SUMMARY 
The Brewing and Packaging Operator is a hybrid position supporting both the brewing and packaging departments. In the brewing capacity, this position includes the operation and basic maintenance of raw materials handling, brewhouse operations, cellar management, and filtration procedures. When helping in the packaging functions, the operators are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the packaging equipment, as well as the cleanliness and organization of the areas of the production floor that packaging occupies. This is a shift job and the shift may vary depending on the needs of the brewery.  Additionally, operators maximize barrels per labor hours, minimize re-work costs, eliminate production scheduling delays, and deliver the highest possible quality product to internal and external customers. 
 
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES 
  • Proper sampling and analysis of fermenting and finished beer
  • Responsible for wort production from brewhouse, including but not limited to raw material handling, milling, mash/lauter operation, wort boiling, cooling, and CIP
  • Responsible for CIP and preparation of fermentation and bright beer tanks
  • Responsible for finished beer handling including but not limited to carbonation, DO monitoring and recording, and packaging preparation
  • Responsible for proper handling of yeast
  • Review completed process paperwork and ensure accurate data entry
  • Work closely with other brewing staff to execute and pass off tasks effectively
  • Maintain a sanitary environment, which includes but not limited to cleaning floors, walls, tanks, and ceilings
  • Strictly follow recipes and standard operating procedures while recommending ways of improving them 
  • CIP, malt milling, operating brewhouse, wort transfers, yeast pitching, fermentation monitoring, filtration, and general cleaning
  • Prepare filtered beer for packaging
  • Operate packaging equipment, including setup, changeover, and shutdown
  • Clean and sanitize packaging equipment (bottle/keg fillers)
  • Follow established procedures for cleaning & sanitizing
  • Follow established procedures for the safe operation of all equipment
  • Cover other shifts when required
  • Assist with keeping all work areas clean and organized
  • Complete OSHA-required training & comply with OSHA-required policies (i.e. permit-required confined spaces, Lockout/Tagout, etc.)
  • Confirm that all machines are locked out and tagged out when being serviced
  • Assist with Canning line and Keg line production and product packaging  as needed 
  • Assist with the repacking of products as needed 
  • Adhere to all company safety policies    
  • Assure that you are not attempting to operate equipment you are not properly trained on
  • Assure equipment is well maintained and functioning properly 
  • Perform operator level maintenance on equipment
  • Notify the packaging manager if anybody is acting in an unsafe manner
  • Perform periodic visual checks to ensure the quality of the finished product in accordance with the quality checklist
  • Must be present and ready to perform their duties by the scheduled time and available to work a minimum of 2 hours overtime per day if required
  • Inform the packaging lead if the proper materials are not at hand, so production is not interrupted
  • Correct any nonconforming packaging issues and notifying the packaging lead of the issue
  • Make sure your work area is cleaned and maintained so required production can proceed
  • Notify the packaging lead of any issues with other employees immediately 
  • Notify the packaging lead of any maintenance issues with the equipment
  • Communicate with the packaging lead or manager if the proper materials are not available or need to be reordered, so production is not interrupted
  • Communicate with the packaging lead or manager when there are maintenance or safety issues beyond an operators skill level

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
  • Attention to detail
  • Forklift Certified (will train)
  • Ability to quickly assess the status of operations and troubleshoot process issues
  • Ability to multitask - strong time management skills are required
  • Ability to perform changeovers on the bottling line (will train)
  • Ability to work with cleaning chemicals, including caustic, acid and other hazardous materials 
  • Ability to be present and ready to perform job duties by the scheduled start time – without the full team assembled, work cannot begin and many are left waiting for a few
  • Physical strength, flexibility and stamina required. Must be able to lift 55 lbs. repeatedly
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule when necessary, shift may vary depending on needs
  • Work with integrity and work ethically 
Compensation: $18.00 - $22.00 per hour
